About Xander
Hey y'all, I'm Xander, a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill aiming to study Psychology on the Pre-Med track while minoring in both Musical Theatre and Medical Anthropology. I have lived in Chapel Hill since 2020 and know a ton about the area. I'm super passionate about the arts, so if you have any questions about local places or events related to them I am here to help. I hope I can answer any questions or concerns you have about college, or just be a general help in learning about the entire process.

Is the campus and area around UNC Chapel Hill safe?
The campus itself is very safe at UNC. There are bluelight stations (helps you contact police for escorts or to report crimes and such) literally everywhere on campus, usually multiple within view in some spaces. UNC also has its own police force so the response time (from what I've heard) is fairly good. The surrounding area can be a little more dangerous, mainly due to there being some homeless people around who of course are unpredictable. Most are chill, and they are few and far between, so as long as you just keep an eye out you shouldn't face any problems.

How easy is it to get involved in clubs at UNC Chapel Hill?
UNC is very helpful when it comes to getting involved with clubs. If I remember correctly, they have well over 100+, and during the first week or so of school even have a club day where you can go to different clubs' tables and learn about/join them. UNC also has a graduation requirement that you have to attend 8 UNC-related social events to graduate (they recommend 1 per semester), and a ton of these events are hosted by the different clubs at the school, which can help you get a more in-depth feel for what they do before joining.

What is game day and school spirit like at UNC Chapel Hill?
Game days are some of the biggest events at UNC and in Chapel Hill. Each time there is a game, people fill the stadiums and if they can't, they'll usually crowd onto Franklin Street and try and find spots with TVs to watch the games (the traffic these days is usually terrible too). Whenever we win, everyone from the stadium comes to Franklin as well and its usually a street-long celebration of the team until well into the morning. As for school spirit, at least speaking from experience, the school does its best to instill a sense of Tarheel pride in you from the start. At orientation, the organizers spent well over an hour just teaching the group all the different chants for the sports events, what you'll sing for graduation, and other general UNC chants. School spirit here is something that plays a big part of the experience, and does honestly bring people together.
