It's practically all chance like most CSUs unfortunately. The only surefire way to improve your chance is avoiding business. It's the most competitive program and has a lower acceptance rate. Don't worry too hard though, it's not a tough school to get into.

Is the campus and area around Cal State San Marcos safe?

San Marcos was ranked as the 13th safest city in California according to Safewise. There are definitely more dangerous locations for a college to be. The campus itself is also distant from residential areas, you rarely see anyone that is not a student, or lives in the neighboring apartments.

How is the dining hall food at Cal State San Marcos?

It's the standard Sodexo (Company that manages most colleges dining halls) dining hall food. Not bad by any means but nothing exceptional. It will get you by. You also have easy access to restaurants like Panda Express and Qdoba that you can use your dining dollars at.
